Updated

Book Nook is the best of the eight StoryGraph alternatives we compared. It is free with no paid tier and no ads. It has goals, challenges and book clubs, and of the nine apps in our comparison, StoryGraph included, it is the only one that shows your books on a bookshelf. It adds a reading timer that shows on the Lock Screen on iPhone and as a notification on Android, and home screen widgets on iPhone and Android. It runs on iPhone, Android and the web, and imports your StoryGraph export with statuses, ratings, dates, tags and reviews.

What StoryGraph offers

The StoryGraph is an independent reading tracker on iPhone, Android and the web. It has charts of your reading, mood and pace tags and content warnings. It has yearly and monthly wrap-up graphics, goals for books, pages and listening, challenges, book clubs, buddy reads and readalongs, and quarter-star ratings. Your books show as lists and grids of covers. StoryGraph Plus, at $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year, adds custom charts, extra stats filters, wrap-up graphics for any date range and stats comparisons. A reading timer and home screen widgets are open requests on its public roadmap. Book Nook vs The StoryGraph sets the two apps side by side.

1. Book Nook

Book Nook is a free reading tracker for iPhone and iPad (iOS 17 or later), Android (8.0 or later) and the web at trybooknook.com, synced between them, with no paid tier and no ads.

Your books on a bookshelf

Each bookshelf is drawn as a bookcase with shelf boards and a back wall, and most frames add side panels. Your books stand on the shelves as covers, or spine-out to fit more on a row, and you drag a book to move it. You can have as many bookshelves as you like, and switch the Bookshelf tab to a List or a Mosaic of covers at any time; your books keep their places on the bookcase. There are five themes (Oak, Midnight Study, Fairy Cottage, Love Letter and Matcha Cafe), a custom theme where you choose the colours, frame, back wall pattern and title font, and 65 decorations such as plants, candles, lamps and dragons to place between the books. More on shelf themes and what a virtual bookshelf app does.

You add books by searching by title, author or ISBN, by scanning the barcode with your camera, or by hand with your own cover photo. Book Nook fills in the cover, author, page count and description. How to catalogue a home library by barcode.

Reading statistics, all free

The statistics show minutes and pages read over the last week, this month or this year, day by day or month by month, with a reading calendar, your streak, your genres and a chart of your ratings, and a daily minutes goal and a yearly books goal. All of it is free on iPhone, Android and the web. Each book has a status (to be read, reading, finished or did not finish) and page progress. Ratings are in quarter stars, the same scale StoryGraph uses, so your StoryGraph ratings come across unchanged.

A reading timer on the Lock Screen

Pick a book on the Reading tab and tap the play button. Stop the timer and enter the page you reached. Book Nook saves the session with its minutes and pages and updates the book's progress. On iPhone the running timer shows on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island as a Live Activity; on Android it shows as a notification with Pause and Stop. You can start a session without opening the app from Control Center, the Lock Screen or the Action button on iPhone (iOS 18 or later), and from Quick Settings or a widget on Android. A daily reminder on iPhone and Android names the book you are reading, at 6:00 PM by default. How the reading timer works.

Widgets on the home screen and Lock Screen

On iPhone and Android, Book Nook has these home screen widgets:

iPhone also has three Lock Screen widgets: Reading Goal, Reading Streak and Current Book. How to add the bookshelf widget.

Reading Wrapped for each month and year

Reading Wrapped sums up each month and each year: the books you finished with their covers, the hours you read and your biggest reading day, your top genres and authors, and your highest-rated books. The iPhone and Android apps share a page to Instagram Stories or TikTok, post all pages as a TikTok slideshow or save them to Photos. On the web you can share or save the pages and open any earlier month or year that has reading. Books imported from StoryGraph count in the month and year their finish date falls in, so on the web your past months and years have a Wrapped as soon as you import. What is in Reading Wrapped.

Book clubs with member progress and folded comments

A Book Nook club reads one book at a time. Each member's place comes from their own copy on their shelf, as a percentage, so members reading different editions still line up, and a progress strip shows how far along everyone is. A comment carries the point its writer had reached and stays folded for anyone behind until they get there or open it. Notifications do not quote a comment you have not reached. Clubs work on iPhone, Android and the web. How Book Nook's book clubs work.

Challenges, nooks and friends

The Community tab holds the yearly reading challenge, challenges any reader can create with a goal and a deadline, and nooks, which are groups for talking about books. The feed shows what the readers you follow are reading, finishing and reviewing, with likes and comments, and every book page has reviews and threads with spoiler tags. Reviews, posts and finished books earn points and stamps on your public profile. Reading challenge ideas for 2027.

2. Hardcover

Hardcover is an independent book tracker on iPhone, Android and the web, with lists and tags, a reading journal, a yearly recap, half-star ratings and a public API. It imports from Goodreads, StoryGraph and CSV files, and has no book clubs or reading challenges. Supporter, at $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year, adds stats for any date range. Book Nook vs Hardcover.

3. Fable

Fable is an app for book clubs and TV clubs, owned by Everand (Scribd) since 2025. Its clubs have spoiler-free rooms by chapter, and it has half-star ratings, Monthly Wraps, a year in review and a streak widget. Its help centre says clubs cannot be used on a computer yet. The free tier shows ads; Plus, at $5.99 a month or $49.99 a year, removes them and adds advanced stats and weekly and monthly goals. Book Nook vs Fable.

4. Goodreads

Goodreads has been owned by Amazon since 2013 and has more than 150 million members, with ratings, reviews, the yearly Reading Challenge, groups and a Year in Books. Shelves are lists or grids of covers. It is free with sponsored books and display ads. It has no reading timer, and its reading statistics are basic. Book Nook vs Goodreads, Goodreads vs StoryGraph and Goodreads alternatives.

5. Bookmory

Bookmory is a reading journal for iPhone and Android with notes, a reading timer with a Live Activity on iPhone, statistics, an Annual Rewind and loan tracking. It has no friends, feed or clubs. The free version shows ads; Premium, at $3.49 a month or $30.99 a year, adds sync, full statistics and custom themes. Book Nook vs Bookmory.

6. Bookshelf

Bookshelf is an app for iPhone, iPad and Mac with collections, reading sessions with a Live Activity, notes and quotes, and an AI librarian, Book Chat, with limited free use and unlimited use in Gold. It imports from Goodreads, StoryGraph, Kindle and Reading List, and has no book clubs. Gold costs $6.99 a month, $29.99 a year or $79.99 once. Book Nook vs Bookshelf.

7. LibraryThing

LibraryThing has catalogued books since 2005 and is free with no limit. It draws records from over 2,000 libraries and has groups and forums where members run challenges. Its iPhone app was last updated in February 2024. Book Nook vs LibraryThing.

8. Libib

Libib catalogues books, films, music and games for homes, schools and small libraries. The free plan holds 5,000 items, and Pro is $9 a month or $99 a year. It has no reading goals, friends or clubs. Book Nook vs Libib.

What comes across from StoryGraph

Import options and undo

You see every book first and can untick books or leave out a status. The books can go on new bookshelves by status, on a bookshelf for each StoryGraph tag (named after a book's first tag; books with none go by status), on one new bookshelf, or on a bookshelf you already have. You can keep or drop ratings, import written reviews to each book's page, and skip or update books already on your shelves. With Show recent finishes to followers on, only books finished in the last two weeks appear in the feed. Book Nook then fills in missing covers and details, and you can undo an import for 7 days. Nothing changes on StoryGraph. Moving from Goodreads or Fable instead? See how to move from Goodreads to Book Nook.

Which StoryGraph alternative to pick

Pick Book Nook. Of the nine apps we compared, it is the only one with both a reading timer and book clubs: Hardcover, Bookmory, Bookshelf and Libib have no book clubs, and StoryGraph, Goodreads, Fable and LibraryThing have no reading timer. Every statistic is free, where StoryGraph keeps custom charts and any-date-range wrap-ups for Plus at $49.99 a year. Your StoryGraph library moves across in one import.
