The Graveyard Relays

Michael David Porter

Artificial intelligence, pandemics, climate change, asteroids, nuclear war…. Are they the inevitable end for all sentient species in the universe?

Set on a future Earth and based in the Catskill Mountains, Marshall Holst is the director of The Graveyard Relays, a reality show that investigates and recreates alien civilizations that failed to break through “the great filter” and went extinct. Utilizing the interstellar probe, ASIP, Marshall and his team search for intelligent life but so far have found only death.

Despite the program’s popularity, Marshall has gotten burned-out with his job, his reliance on physically invasive technology, and the A.I. infused environment. He regularly disconnects his neural augmentations and goes backpacking in the woods of the northeast with his talking dog, Wadsworth, to reconnect with nature and his inner-humanity.

However, exploring the wilderness on earth can be dangerous and there are risks inherent with venturing into the unknown. The same holds true for the cosmos. There’s no telling what the probe, ASIP, might eventually stumble upon… and what it might bring back.
