FABRIC GARDENS: An International Exhibition of Quilts At Expo '90
Play. Speak. is a collection of 40 challenging monologues for young actors, ages 13 to 18. The collection covers a vast range of circumstances that address many different situations from a variety of factors, including social class, race and ethnicity, mental health, and simply, maturity level, wrapped in an array of circumstances and genres, i.e. family drama, personal discovery and growth, coming of age comedic drama, and more, that can be used for auditions, acting exercises, or audience entertainment in a stage review. The pieces are arranged in increasing difficulty such that teachers who wish to use the book have more challenging monologues for their students in acting classes at schools or professional programs. The book also includes an instructional section on breaking down a monologue, and each monologue is followed by a “breakdown sheet” with “short cut words” for notes to help the young actor stay focused and grounded in the character. Therefore, Play. Speak. is more than just a collection of monologues, it’s also a workbook that will help instructors guide young actors, and help students hone their character study skills in the classroom and on their own.
