In these pages, together with pretty pictures, the reader will find brief, sometimes paraphrased, quotations chosen from the works of wise and thoughtful individuals whose influence in the modern world has waned. Some of these are truisms about 3000 years old and others come from more recent times. If these pages delight, help or comfort just a handful of people the effort involved in bringing them together will have been worthwhile. It would also be gratifying if they were to annoy certain others.
