The air was stale, bitter, and cold. I could taste the hint of salt from the smog that night. That smell always made me think of home. The light from the streetlamp flicked on and off as the water from an old pipe dripped onto the tin can beneath. Drip, drip, drip… The sound became almost a comfort. It allowed my mind to focus on anything other than the idea of what they would do to me next. Pain seared down my body as my hand drifted over the black and blue marks on my upper arms. So many times, I wished any of them would just kill me and let this be over with. So many times, I just wanted it all to end. Never did I think it could get worse. Never did I think the one I loved the most could hurt me this way. The door swung open, and I knew this was it; I felt my soul leave my body, and it was almost peaceful; for that moment, nothing could have hurt me, but I'd never know a pain like the betrayal I would have to face.
