Leon Russell: The Rise and Fall of the Famous Rock Musician

Oliver Taylor

After contributing anonymously as a much-requested studio pianist on scores of pop singles in the 1960s, Leon Russell emerged in the 1970s as one of rock and roll's most explosive performers. He had a brief period of fame as a musician, but in 2010, he made a return with the aid of Elton John, who had previously served as Russell's opening act, on an album titled The Union.

Russell released over thirty-five studio albums and was also a very successful composer. In addition to his close friend Willie Nelson, artists such as Joe Cocker, the Carpenters, the Temptations, Neil Diamond, Lou Rawls, Dusty Springfield, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and others have recorded their versions of A Song for You. He ruled the stage with piano-banging abandon and, backed by a multi-piece band and a backup chorus, put on a show that was a roiling stew of rock, soul, gospel, and country.

However, his celebrity life was short-lived, as he ended up being mediocre despite his skillfulness in music. Learn more about Russell's upbringing, his rise and fall in the music industry, and his way of life in this detailed book.
