The Things We Left Behind

We all have a history, a beginning, and an end; the life in between seems to be composed of two things. The things we carry with us and the things we leave behind. At this point in my life, it seems like the things I left behind were the most important. Of all the things I left behind, my peace of mind was the worst. For my life to have started off so wonderfully, it seemed to have gone terribly wrong. I had done horrible, unthinkable things in the name of honor and patriotism. I gave it my best shot trying everything possible to redeem myself. No matter how much I did right, none of it was enough to overcome the shame of all the things I left behind. One thing I couldn't bear to leave behind was my family knowing that I would never see them again. I couldn't leave a legacy like this a legacy of guilt. Then this one man finally had the audacity to ask me a big question. Even he admitted that he thought it would either work or I would punch him. It could have easily gone either way. I had one last battle to fight, the toughest one of my life; the stakes were high, the highest ever. I was fighting for my soul, and eternity was at stake.
