Oration on Voltaire
Victor Hugo's Oration on Voltaire is a blazing defense of reason, conscience, and human dignity against prejudice, fanaticism, and tyranny. Hugo presents Voltaire as the immortal voice of an age: a philosopher, polemicist, and champion of the persecuted whose pen helped guide Europe from monarchy toward revolution and modern thought. The speech celebrates philosophy, science, peace, and labor while denouncing war, oppression, and the alliance of religion with injustice. To prove his case, Hugo turns to the horrors of old-regime France, especially the tragic persecutions of Jean Calas and the Chevalier de La Barre, whose suffering exposes the cruelty of fanatical justice. Voltaire emerges as the lone defender of humanity, armed with wit, courage, and a famous smile that symbolizes mercy and the civilizing power of reason. Hugo even casts him beside Christ as a protector of truth and the weak. The tribute broadens into a celebration of the Enlightenment as a whole, honoring Montesquieu, Buffon, Beaumarchais, Rousseau, and Diderot as architects of modern civilization. It then reflects on Voltaire's death and the clerical attempts to claim a last-minute conversion, insisting that he remained a steadfast freethinker to the end. Brandes's interpretation deepens the portrait by tracing Voltaire's English experiences, his friendships and patronage there, and his transformative encounters with power, including Frederick the Great, as influences that made him a truly international critic of his age.
