Happy Endings

With a talent like Charlie Zamarripa, you’re uncovering a lot of layers in his poetry, simultaneously polished and rough from inexperience. And it’s that mix that makes the writing most interesting. In many ways, Charlie’s second collection is more exciting then his first. “Happy Endings” didn’t afford Charlie the benefit of time to tweak and labor over every line the way he did with a lifetime’s worth of labor that went into the debut. Rather, there is an exhilaration and energy to Charlie’s newest set that wasn’t there before. What also makes his work a joy to read, the collection as a whole, is its variety and playfulness with forms, how he deviates from the conventions of rhyme and meter, length, tone, mixing colloquialisms with the button-down verbiage one might expect from poetry.
