A Midnight Posse

Richard Parker

Driving through this small town, you would think it was peaceful. If you came into town on West Liberty Street, you would drive over the dam for Mill Pond. The calm blue waters there might cause you to slow down and meditate on the pleasant town which enfolds you. If you stayed on Liberty and headed east, you would cross another body of water called Swan Lake. Following the signs to the Iris Gardens, you could see the many waterfowl native to the area. In the spring, you might catch sight of a Great blue heron, but the rest of the year, you could find about fifteen species of ducks.

If you drove into the center of town, you would pass the Police Station, a few bars, the elementary school, and various stores. All these places would look normal as you made your way around town and through the residential subdivisions. But if you lived here, this small harmless-looking town might be your battlefield. There you might be fighting with your family, your friends, or your spouse.

There could be a clandestine affair waiting to destroy your world, or an injustice festering from your past. And some of your neighbors probably own deadly weapons. And, as in all towns, there are those who as set on theft, homicide, or swindle. So, if you go there, keep your eyes open and be prepared to duck.
