Until the Day Breaks

Reverend Trevor Davenport, a well-respected pastor and community leader, waited in his office rehearsing his Sunday morning sermon. "If we choose to hold on to the past, we are destined to be destroyed by it," he said, waving his hands in the air. "Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself to have reached perfection, but one thing I do: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on..." As he stared out into the congregation, he imagined approving nods and amens, though he could not clearly see their faces. However, there was one face he could plainly see. It was the face of Kaylee Martin, a girl he once dated. She was shouting at him, disrupting the morning worship service. "Hypocrite," she screamed, smiling sadistically. She leaned her head back and exploded in maniacal laughter."Please forgive me," he said, reaching out to touch her. She vanished in thin air. She would be back. She always came back.A knock at the door startled him," Pastor Davenport flinched, dropping his sermon notes."Reverend. Davenport," said his secretary Amy, "the choir is ready to sing their first selection.""I'll be right out," he replied. That was not the first time the pastor had been haunted by memories from his past, but it was the first time he had seen the girl in the blue sweater sitting in the congregation. She bore a strong resemblance to Kaylee. Rattled by her presence, Reverend Davenport must find a way to reconcile with his past, or forever be plagued by it.
