Totally Off the Reservation: 103 Days in Hell

Ken Hansard

Two weeks in hell is an eternity… My wife and children were dead – killed in a fiery auto accident. And it was all my fault. For two weeks in early 2009 I lay dying of an unknown ailment, sedated to a drug-induced coma by my doctors, convinced that I had been sentenced to hell for killing my wife and four children, tortured by their screams and the memory of their charred, lifeless bodies. When the doctors finally woke me, I was frantic and confused. Struggling with my sanity and the idea that I was still in hell, I tried to kill myself. Days later, due to complications from treatment, my lungs filled with blood and I coded. Doctors spent 20 minutes resuscitating me, complete with a Pulp Fiction-like scalpel stab to the chest. Totally off the Reservation: 103 Days in Hell is a sometimes poignant, often sardonic look at the series of events that nearly took my life. It is a memoir that celebrates life, love, and laughter and chronicles the miraculous set of events that brought me back from the brink of death.
