The New Sibyl

J. C. Miller

The actor, Bond Farmer, and his wife, the humanities professor, Lily, relocate to Italy for her archeological work centered at Pompeii. But not long after they arrive seismic unrest begins. Then intensifies. Lily is drawn to the Cave of the Sibyl of Cuma. So she and Bond visit the cave on a regular guided tour. There they meet Phoebe of Indiana, a middle aged woman tourist who knows nothing of the history but who turns out to be the Sibyl herself. She doesn't come out of the cave and she gathers a following. Then the army gets involved. The sibyl of old Grecian and Roman times was brought to prophesy by inhaling the volcanic breath of Apollo inside the cave. Not once the prophesies of these oracles saved Rome. Bond and Lily dream of Phoebe. And she dreams of them. And a transmission is made. A prophesy and a warning of a Supermind in our own time. Artificial Intelligence. A warning of catastrophe and transformation. And Lily realizes the sibyl's message is meant for her. She has the professor's podium. She is in the perfect place to warn us of the Supermind's real danger to humanity. It's its programmers. Us.
