Believe Me

David Benson

Believe Me is the central story in this collection of short stories by David Benson, the author of The Jack's Trilogy and focuses on the Trilogy's two central protagonist, Steve Miller and Jimmy Gant. One of the last cases that fell the way of Detective Sergeant Jimmy Gant in Duke Street Police Station, was an assault in a Monkston Pub. A Pub that was notorious for being the home of many of Monkston's thieves and prostitutes. The case was complicated in as much that two persons had been assaulted and each blamed the other. Gant's dilemma was in deciding who to believe. In the end a decision was made and one of the two was tried and convicted, but the verdict left Gant in serious doubt that it was the correct one. Gant's dilemma was made worse when, after the trial, he overheard two his colleagues talking. What he overheard increased his suspicions over the verdict. Gant's belief in justice became strained and he found himself not believing anybody, no matter how long he had known and trusted them!
