Darkness Hides the Flowers
Product Description
The memoir is a true-life adventure story of a Jewish teenage girl running from the Gestapo. Young Ida had dreams of being a pianist when she was unexpectedly thrown into the wilderness of rural France, and had to survive alone. Her narrative is illustrated with 14 illustrations, 6 of which are full color reproductions of Ida's original paintings (painted mostly from memory), 7 of her original poems (in the original French, translated to English by Ida), and a Timeline of Historical Events.
About the Author
Ida Hoffmann Firestone (1929-2010) was a pianist, painter and dedicated Holocaust educator. Ida spoke frequently to students throughout the Philadelphia metropolitan area, teaching compassion and tolerance by sharing her personal story of survival. She told her story, and supervised its drafting, to author Dr. Jerry L. Jennings, a clinical psychologist and award-winning screenwriter and writer living near Philadelphia. He has published over 30 articles on psychology and philosophy in journals such as The American Psychologist, Psychotherapy, and The Journal of Mind and Behavior. Dedicated to preserving and honoring the personal stories of Holocaust survivors, Dr. Jennings has also researched and written two other memoirs, and has written a screenplay based on one of his books. This screenplay has been a winner, semi-finalist and quarter-finalist in five national screenplay competitions.
