The year is 2009, and Chrissy Rodriguez is determined to make her ghost hunting vlog an internet success. She’s only one more failed investigation away from financial ruin and having to move back home. When she receives an email asking her to investigate Merlin High, a school that burned down in the 80s, she is presented with a unique opportunity that could make or break her.

The cover caught my attention so I bought a signed copy of 80s Ghosts by V.S. Lawrence but never really picked it up—until now. I honestly wasn’t expecting it to be as good as it was. The story follows three up-and-coming YouTube investigators who are invited to explore a burned-down high school. Once inside, a tragic story unfolds, and the past begins to resurface, revealing far more than they ever imagined. I was born in 1985, so I don’t remember much of the ’80s firsthand, but the atmosphere and details still felt familiar in that secondhand, nostalgic way—especially as the story drifts into the early ’90s. The twists were effective, and the emotional weight of what happened in the past really landed. I went in with low expectations and came away genuinely impressed. 80s Ghosts is a creepy, nostalgic, and surprisingly engaging read.
