The Tree of Nine Worlds

Julia Selch

An ancient evil has escaped the seat of the gods, having conquered the shield put in place by Odin to protect Midgard. Erika, once abandoned by her mother as a child, discovers that she is the daughter of the Norse goddess of magic - the only human whose powers still work in her world. She is summoned to the nine worlds, as time is running out for mankind. Her only hope for success is to learn the magical abilities she barely dreamed she had, while facing giants, dwarves, elves, gods and witches. She must travel all the way to the underworld, where a fearsome dragon resides - but all isn't what it seems. The events that unfold not only test the limits of her newfound powers, but also disturb an ancient legend when Erika and her friends find a sword like no other... --- "A witch? This girl will never be a witch," Huginn said, his voice a high-pitched whine in the darkness. Two pairs of beady black eyes watched Erika in the solitude of a Newfoundland winter morning. Only when the second voice shrieked beneath a ruffle of feathers, followed by a loud thump, did the two become visible as ravens. A muffled curse disturbed the silent night air as the second bird clambered back onto his perch atop the stables. "Fool," muttered the first. "Why Odin keeps you as his messenger is beyond my comprehension. As though I'm not enough! I, Huginn, messenger raven of the gods!" He puffed out his chest and Muninn, the second raven, drooped his head in the twilight. "I'm sorry," he said, pressing a feather back into place with much difficulty. In a quiet voice, he added, "but I do think you are wrong. For now Odin doesn't need her; she is just a girl, and the nine worlds are sealed. The humans and gods are all safe. Soon, however, you may hope that she does have magic..." "Pah!" said Huginn, and again, "Pah! This girl will never be a witch, and that's that."
