As I know, however, very little concerning this Line, and as I do not desire to oppose a policy, as Mr. Love opposed "The Hythe Railway," because he "knew nothing of it," so respecting "The Colne Valley Extension" I shall leave you to make your own inquiries. I have said enough, perhaps, to show that such inquiries are desirable, if you wish the Eastern Counties Railway to be made "to pay." I have shown you that every successive half-year since Mr. Love has managed our affairs, the legal expenses have increased. What they will amount to next year, I dread to contemplate. There will not only be "the costs" under the Award to be paid for, but the expenses of the "suit in Chancery" with the Norfolk and Eastern Union, the costs of the opposition to the Bedford and Cambridge, to the Great Northern invasions, and to the Lines "within the triangle" which threaten our whole trunk system. Mr. Love will have to demonstrate to you that this policy of strife and litigation is a better policy than a policy of peace, conciliation, and good-will.
