It is spring, 1961 and fourteen-year-old Mack Taylor has a forbidding secret to keep, one that could tear apart his family if exposed. Confused and unsure of what to do, he decides to leave home and take it with him. He hitchhikes to Nevada, where he finds work as a hired hand on the largest ranch in the State. As a boy hiding among men, Mack begins to sort out his dilemma while grappling with his new lifestyle and the uniquely odd characters that come with it. As he moves from boy to man and back to boy, he learns the power of courage, unveils the mystery of sex, and then discovers the solution that will vanquish the secret. But will it rescue his family? Or will it be the final blow that destroys it?
