The Graveyard Psychic

Wayne McElhone

Have you ever visited a graveyard and wondered what crimes are buried there? Vadoma Badi (Vadoma means ‘one who knows) lives in the isolated gypsy town of Little Romani in Northern Ontario. She lives with her parents, Roma and Vano Badi. Kezia Boswell, a ninety-year-old resident, is a Drabardi, likened to being a witch, has taken a keen interest in Vadoma since her powers as a Drabardi are ebbing. Vadoma has an on-again, off-again relationship with the older woman. Today, on her sixteenth birthday, she defies an order that restricted her from walking the path that leads into the forest. This transgression leads to secrets and crimes made by the citizens of Little Romani. It is also where Vadoma learns much about herself and her family.

The path that she takes on her walk of independence leads to an old-neglected cemetery with an inscription, Awaiting justice. At first, she dismissed her visit as totally unremarkable until she discovered the gravestone of Danior Badi. She is intrigued by the fact that the headstone bears her surname. When she touches the marker, it triggers a vision in her head. She witnesses her father shaking baby Danior until he is dead. Her discovery sets off many questions in her mind. At first, she dismisses this as just a daydream but soon learns that further investigation is necessary. It also sets into play a series of lies and secrets between her and her parents and Kezia.

She manages to maintain the secret with her parents but not from Kezia, who could use her Drabardi skills to enter her mind unannounced. As Kezia’s summer student, she works to earn money from the old lady. She is surprised when Kezia asks her about her trip to the graveyard. Over time, it is revealed to Vadoma that she is also a Drabardi, and Kezia is her mentor. Vadoma suspects that Kezia is using her to shore her waning Drabardi skills.

As a Drabardi, Vadoma is obliged to uphold justice for victims who cannot speak for themselves. With Kezia as an ally, Vadoma sets about to mete out justice to perpetrators who deserve to be punished. They do this by using the blue crystal skull, which they use to weave their spells. They discover many crimes committed by residents that lay buried in the cemetery. Vadoma tries to escape from Kezia’s clutches several times but always returns.

A town resident, Brishan Wigmore, is a vile man. The two Drabardi learn that he raped Vadoma’s mother and killed Kezia’s daughter to whom he was married. They dispensed with Brishan by cursing him to an unseemly death.

They confront a series of cases such as infanticide, perversions, arrogance, and sexual assaults. Vadoma learns that Drabardi status is inherited. She is led on a path of discovery. Who is Kezia? And how does her mother figure into everything? A shocking truth reveals itself. Kezia is her grandmother who placed her daughter up for adoption at birth.

As things progress, Vadoma makes further visits to the cemetery. Here she meets the Aura, the spirit of a Drabardi past-a Doyenne, the queen of Drabardi. Vadoma finds out that she will be the new Doyenne, who rewards her with a red crystal skull which is more powerful than the blue skull that Kezia owns.
