Deputy State Treasurer Randall Sweeney's campaign for the high office of State Treasurer is close to dying. Lacking funds from his own party, as well as the much-needed endorsement of the current treasurer, Sweeney's campaign sees a sudden infusion of money to finance a last-minute television blitz. The contributions may be in time to halt his rapid drop in the recent public polls, much to the delight of his manipulative campaign manager, Timothy Chapman. An elderly woman inexplicably wanders out into a snowstorm and freezes to death. A handyman picks the wrong morning to walk along a mountain road and becomes the victim of a seemingly senseless hit-and-run. A bed-ridden convalescent patient goes to sleep one evening and doesn't wake up the next morning. An aged spinster is found in her hallway three weeks after suffering a fatal heart attack. Was she scared to death? By coincidence, an unusual number of releases of unclaimed property from the State vault occur within days of these deaths and precede the unexpected deposits into Randall Sweeney's campaign account, all authorized by Sweeney himself.Jason Sanders, the State Investment Director, doesn't believe in coincidence.
