Second Samuel
Second Samuel picks up with an Amalekite arriving to tell David that King Saul has died on Mt Gilboa. He has brought King Saul’s crown and bracelet to David. The whole nation knew that David was to be king after Saul. Saul knew it. Saul’s sons knew it, too.
The book is not in chronological order. The book's contents were recorded by three authors: Samuel, Gad, and Nathan. When the book was compiled, the chronicles of each of those men were combined in topic order to create the book. The three topics are:
David’s Securing the Throne of Israel, David’s Triumphs in Israel as the King, and David’s Troubles in His Family Life.
The book is helpful to everyone today because it describes the elements of a conspiracy and how they are birthed and developed in step-by-step order. Knowing these elements can help you see when a conspiracy is coming your way and how to avoid it. In addition, the storyline shows how important it is for a father to handle family issues immediately. It also shows why not addressing those issues will lead to family dysfunction.
The chapters in this commentary match the chapters in your Bible.
