Yesteryear

Robert Risch

This novel traces a Midwest youngster growing up in the '50s and '60s who, like Proust, experiences vivid, life-like deja vu episodes. Unlike the French author, however, Reed's flashbacks are not brought on by his sense of taste - as was the case with Proust's aunt's tea cakes - but rather his sense of hearing, triggered by songs of his past. Friendship, romance, heartache, music and events of the day from the backdrop for this well-intentioned, amusing, sensitive, often naive young man whose quest for a girlfriend creates some unique and interesting situations.
