The Reckoning
As the main characters from 'The Homecoming' ; Matt, Khanyisile and their daughter PJ settle into family life, this novel journeys with them as they experience new challenges together. Their fledgling business flourishes in new parts of the country, but their deep links to the Kingdom of Eswatini are terribly tested when they must overcome the trauma of a frightening crime. Vividly and acutely described, with well-drawn, authentic characters, it brings to life the richness and unique colour of rural life in Eswatini (Swaziland), the local people’s voices, and the Kingdom's awe-inspiring scenery. This novel follows on from ‘The Homecoming’, and is set a few years later. Readers who enjoyed that novel would love this sequel, but it can also be read independently. The reader becomes immersed in the sights and sounds of the country and gets caught up in an event that threatens to overwhelm and destroy the Barton family when PJ is abducted. It is a richly rewarding read, sustaining all the charm, sensitivity, and dusty authenticity of ‘The Homecoming’. Highly recommended , hugely emotional and engrossing. The author draws on his many years living and working in the tiny Kingdom to ensure that the descriptions and relationships are both accurately drawn, powerfully portrayed and intense. A profound experience.
