A Bill Evans Reader Volume 2 THE NOTES
There are four book length treatments of Bill’s career: Peter Pettinger’s biography Bill Evans: How My Heart Sings [1988], Enrico Pieranunzi’s Ritratto d’Artista con Pianoforte -The Pianist As An Artist [1999], Keith Shadwick’s Bill Evans: Everything Happens to Me [2002], and my own Bill Evans Reader Volume 1 [2024] which contains many of the excellent pieces about Bill Evans and his music written for the national Jazz press in the 1960 and 1970s by Gene Lees, Brian Hennessey and Don Nelson, among many others. But one huge source of information about Bill's recorded music remained largely unpublished in book form - the LP liner, CD sleeve notes, or Boxed Set booklet notes. These narratives and informed opinions that graced the backs of Jazz LPs in the 1950s and 60s or were later included in the jewel cases of CDs provided a wealth of information about the artist and the music which was not to be found elsewhere. Volume 2 of The Bill Evans Reader includes 56 chapters and 361 pages of these invaluable NOTES to Bill’s recordings with each chapter fully annotated with additional information about these albums.
