The Daisy Rock
Fergus and Flora, a childless retired couple, live in an inconvenient Victorian house which they cannot really maintain. Fergus keeps a tank of salt water fish and generally annoys his wife. His sister, Stella, owner of several boutiques, is a particular thorn in his side, though she gets on well with Flora. Stella's surprise gift of a new fish, dropped into the tank without a spell in fish quarantine, turns out especially badly. When Fergus and Flora go on holiday to the Scottish resort where they met as children, the past is brought before them in sometimes unwanted ways. Fergus once saved a life on the rock known as Daisy Rock but since then life has turned out disappointingly, and Flora lives with the vague feeling that, somehow, life has yet to begin for her. When the holiday takes a tragic turn, she finds herself presented with a sort of new beginning.
