High Eagle Pass

Larry Haines

'on that hill there was a tree, and the green grass grew all around'Imagine, if you will, a snow covered highway traversing up a long grade. The State Patrol has required your north bound vehicle to install tire chains to climb the 6352 foot summit of High Eagle Pass. Being from the Deep South, this is rugged territory, and it's snowing like you've never seen in all your life. But you press on. When you reach the top you'll be just 40 miles from your destination, Dalton Gardens, Idaho. On the left is a thick pine forest. On the right is a guard rail and a very steep drop-off into a gully some 1500 feet below. Only one lone Ponderosa Pine tree decorates that east view. For those that have been to Glacier National Park in Montana on summer vacation, this drive reminds you a lot of the beautiful 'Going to the Sun Highway' ... slow, winding, and treacherous. If you have never been there, you're missing a lot!In this fictional story, identical twin girls are born to the Reverend Martin and Mrs. Teresa Woodstrom in Louisiana as the calendar turns a milestone into the 21st century. With the girls' unique dates of birth and the help of the local station, KLQA-TV, the preacher and the church gain much recognition. Over the years, other factors are put into play to let Reverend Woodstrom meet other influential men and women in his profession all across the country. Meanwhile, 2000 miles away, the McElroy family celebrates the younger son's 16th birthday in the northern Idaho panhandle. Little did 18 year old Connar McElroy realize when he bought that state lottery ticket as a practical joke for his younger brother, Daniel, that it would be the big winner, resulting in millions of dollars, a lifetime of wealth for the McElroy family to enjoy. A simple handshake between Daniel and Connar binds the two siblings in friendship forever.A chance meeting between Rev. Woodstrom and Rev. Baker of Idaho at one of Woodstrom's regional seminars, combined with the aging pastor's failing health and a much needed hiatus from the early cold weather of the Pacific Northwest, is the key to unlock this romantic story. The McElroy brothers could hardly predict that their spending decisions would put them in the right place at the right time five years later to rescue a pair of lovely young Southern Belles from a near fatal disaster during a severe early winter snow storm. Each of their four lives will change for the better during that short encounter, providing a wonderful potential that will take only three weeks to blossom, yet another year to fully realize as the inevitable outcome.Something special is passed down to each pair by their grandparents, something that will bring the four young folks together in a very meaningful way. But first they have to come to the reality that there CAN BE such a thing as 'love at first sight' ... and when discovered, it can last.Although several spiritual topics are introduced, including some controversial ones, this is not intended to be a religious story ... just a modern day romance that takes place around Christmas time with a church setting as the background. The reader may be assured that your mind will be enlightened and your own life will be affected in a positive way by experiencing ...High Eagle Pass
