Les Judéo-Convers: Tolède, XVe-XVIe Siècles: De L'exclusion à L'intégration

Vincent Parello

Discusses the sociological, demographic, and economic aspects of the lives of Conversos in the district of Toledo up to 1574, when the Inquisition ceased to persecute the descendants of Jews. Describes repressions which began at the end of the 15th century against the practice of certain Jewish rituals. At the beginning of the 16th century, the discriminatory legislative system of exclusion from public and administrative sectors of life became harsher. Relates inquisitorial, royal and pontifical forms of persecution. In the mid-16th century, the "limpieza de sangre" statutes were introduced. Ideological texts written by theologians or nationalistic writers treated the Conversos in the same way as Jews: as an anti-social group which endangers the kingdom's policies. Despite the persecution, the Converso community became well integrated in the Old Christian society.
