Together in Burma Hurricane : Royal Australian Air Force
The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) is the principal aerial warfare force of Australia, a part of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) along with the Royal Australian Navy and the Australian Army. The Air Force is commanded by the Chief of Air Force (CAF), who is subordinate to the Chief of the Defence Force (CDF). The CAF is also directly responsible to the Minister of Defence, with the Department of Defence administering the ADF and the Air Force Jack Storey was only 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighed 110 pounds, but demonstrated the truth in the old saying about 'the size of the fight in the dog, not the size of the dog.' Storey volunteered early in 1940 for the wartime RAAF and was posted to 135 Sqn RAF, commanded by one of the great fighter pilots of the RAF: Frank Carey. Few would have been a better mentor for young pilots, as Carey had about 18 victories by the end of the Battle of Britain. The squadron went to Burma and became heavily involved, flying Hurricanes against numerically superior Japanese Army units, operating from some primitive conditions. Ably taught by Carey, Storey distinguished himself by learning the lessons of flying in Burma and ran up a score of eight victories, all against agile Japanese fighters, the Ki27 'Nate' and Ki43 'Oscar'. After time as an instructor, Storey returned to Australia and again instructed there until the end of the war. He was rated as 'exceptional' by his commanders.
