The Code of the Woosters

P. G. Wodehouse

Product Description Fans devoted to the master of comic fiction P.G. Wodehouse are legion. He represents an antic high point in the world of farce and social satire. Best known for the creation of two fictional worlds based on Blandings Castle and the Wooster-Jeeves, gentleman-valet duo, Wodehouse is appreciated the world over for his exceedingly clever and comically savvy send-ups of the idle rich in Edwardian England.

In The Code of The Woosters, it takes all the ingenuity of Jeeves, the gentleman's  gentleman extraordinaire, to rescue his hapless and hopelessly obtuse young employer, Bertie Wooster, from the pickle of a plot to steal a silver jug from the home of an irascible magistrate. Review Bertie and Jeeves are at their best in The Code of the Woosters. "

You should read Wodehouse when you re well, and when you re poorly; when you re travelling, and when you re not; when you re feeling clever, and when you re feeling utterly dim. Wodehouse always lifts your spirits, no matter how high they happen to be already. --Lynne Truss"

Wodehouse s idyllic world can never stale. He will continue to release future generations from captivity that may be more irksome than our own. He has made a world for us to live in and delight in. --Evelyn Waugh"

Wodehouse is the funniest writer that is, the most resourceful and unflagging deliverer of fun that the human race, a glum crowd, has yet produced. " From the Back Cover A Jeeves and Wooster novel [insert P.G. Wodehouse signature] You dont analyse such sunlit perfection, you just bask in its warmth and splendour. Like Jeeves, Wodehouse stands alone. Stephen Fry When Bertie Wooster goes to Totleigh Towers to pour oil on the troubled waters of a lovers' breach between Madeline Bassett and Gussie Fink-Nottle, he isnt expecting to see Aunt Dahlia there nor to be instructed by her to steal some silver. But purloining the antique cow creamer from under the baleful nose of Sir Watkyn Bassett is the least of Berties tasks. He has to restore true love to both Madeline and Gussie and to the Revd Stinker Pinker and Stiffy Byng and confound the insane ambitions of would-be Dictator Roderick Spode and his Black Shorts. Its a situation that only Jeeves can unravel From AudioFile When Bertie Wooster and his faithful valet, Jeeves, visit Totleigh Towers, the stately home of Sir Watkyn Bassett, mayhem ensues. Bertie is given several tasks, many of which conflict, including stealing a silver-cow creamer, retrieving a purloined leather-bound notebook, and safeguarding the nuptials of two sets of friends. As is usually the case whenever Bertie Wooster tries to do anything, he finds himself deep in the soup, leaving it up to the clever Jeeves to save his neck. Nicolas Coster has a wonderful voice for reading most of Wodehouse, but not for the "Jeeves" stories, which are narrated in the voice of foppish Bertie Wooster. Coster's slow, deliberate reading style, with its aged rumble and occasional tremolo, does not suit Wooster's youth and lively personality. S.E.S. © AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine From the Inside Flap P.G.Wodehouse's best-loved creation by far is the master-servant team of Bertie Wooster, the likable nitwit, and Jeeves, his effortlessly superior valet and protector. This unlikely duo is as famous as Holmes and Watson, Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, and Tracy and Hepburn, but they have their own very special inimitable charm. According to Walter Clemons, Newsweek, "They are at their best in The Code of the Woosters," in which Bertie is rescued from his bumbling escapades time and time again by that gentleman's gentleman: Jeeves. I reached out a hand from under the blankets, and rang the bell for Jeeves.

'Good evening, Jeeves.'

'Good morning, sir.'

This surprised me.

'Is it morning?'

'Yes, sir.'

'Are you sure? It seems very dark outside.'
