Santiago The Slippery Snake

James Lee Tabor

Santiago is a bright green snake with yellow stripes who lives by the creek. Even though he’s friendly and gentle, all the other forest animals—rabbits, squirrels, birds—are terrified of him just because he’s a snake. Whenever he tries to say hello, they run away, leaving him lonely and sad. One day, Santiago finds a baby bird that has fallen from its nest and injured its wing. At first the little bird is scared, but Santiago speaks softly, reassures it, and carefully coils his body to lift the bird safely back to its nest high in the tree. The grateful mama bird thanks him, and soon the whole forest hears about Santiago’s kind deed. The rabbits and squirrels come to apologize for judging him by his appearance. They realize Santiago has a loving heart, and they all become friends. From then on, everyone plays together by the creek, helps one another, and welcomes every creature, no matter how different they look. Moral: Don’t judge others by how they look on the outside. True friendship comes from the kindness we carry inside.
