Dial Tones The Author's Diary
Poetry is supposed to be powerful. A culmination of metaphor, simile, descriptive imagery, and an established system of acceptable literary devices and practices. Truthfully, this was the view I had chosen to accept until I began writing from my heart. Pressing my pen to the page, I expected a stream of coded thought to come flowing through the ink, but simplicity took its place. The metaphors I waited on were replaced with simplified feelings and direct statements. The simplicity made me feel less than an artist. If my messages are not coded in complex verbiage, then are they not artistic? The answer, I have found, is a resounding "yes". Poetry, within the realm of academia, is as defined earlier. Still, poetry is art. Is a medium used to transfer thought and convey emotion. To disregard emotional expression is to disregard art. To criticize the depth of a person's feelings is to criticize the individuality of a person. To cease creating because someone dislikes your creation is to cease expression, and to cease expression is to cease living. Dial Tones is my diary. It is my art. It is my truth.
