Behind the Cellar Door
Hilde Schmidt, Berlin university student and fledgling actress, has no idea that on May 10th, 1933, her Jewish friend Etan will disappear, she’ll witness the biggest book burning in history, and fall in love with Franz, an SS officer. As the Nazis take control of Germany, Hilde’s family becomes targeted by the secret police. They shut down her father’s newspaper and detain him on trumped up charges. Fighting back, Hilde joins the Resistance at the same time her soldier husband becomes further immersed in Nazi ideology. This historical novel is told from Hilde’s point of view, as she tries to make sense of a world gone mad. She is forced to endure the terror of Nazi oppression and the brutality of occupying Russian soldiers.
