Ride the High Lonesome
It was still early in the day. The sun was at about the ten o'clock position in the sky. He led the pony to the cabin and dropped the reins to the ground. Stepping onto the porch and through the door, he slapped on his gunleather and pulled the Henry. Closing the door behind him, he walked to the Red Guy and slid the rifle into the boot, then gave it an extra shove to ensure that it was fully vested . He mounted up and rode out of the yard. After riding several hundred yards, he was met by a covey of riders coming toward him. Not recognizing who was approaching him, he reached down and loosed the hammer tie on his Colt. Then, drawing his horse to a standstill, he waited. Both of his hands rested upon his saddlehorn. His gunhand lightly poised and ready above the other. He thought it a bit early in the day for any serious business, but one could never tell. He calculated from the onset that there were four riders. He had misjudged. There were five. Riding bunched up in a cloud of dust makes it tough to cipher numbers.
