Gettin' Skooled We All Folk.
What "Gettin' Skooled" has to say: The violence attached to Urban Unrest is not a race problem but a product of the Social Injustice of Inner City Living. In Urban Education, fear is the primary motivating factor for teachers, students, admin, parents, guardians and the police. This fear (not unlike PTSD) is collateral damage of lifetime exposure to the violence that exists within the combat zone of the War on Drugs. That education has the power to deescalate and transform fear in a Dr. King, Gandhi like approach. The label "At Risk" is a euphemism for "In-Danger" whether in reference to a student or a nation. That education has "Accommodated Away" personal responsibility by "The Big Three of the IEP": Non-Compliance, Off-Task and Failure to Follow Directions. These three accommodated behaviors are predicators to adjudication and death by cop. We are not setting these students up for any kind of success. That the emotional root of these Behavioral Traits is an anemic hope for the future. There's not enough hope for any of our "At Risk" population. "Gettin' Skooled"is a swatch of urban cloth written as four days in the intersecting lives of an urban learning community.
