LEARNING TO USE TRIGGER POINTS THERAPY EFFECTIVELY: Healing Touch: The Comprehensive Guide to Treating Trigger Points and Eradicating Pain

ANDREW JOHNSON

Muscles have tender spots called trigger points that are triggered when the muscle is pinched or otherwise aroused. These spots, known as "knots," are palpable bands or hard nodules within the affected muscle. Overuse, injury, poor posture, and stress have all been hypothesized to contribute to the development of trigger points. Referred pain occurs when a trigger point produces sensations of discomfort in a region of the body other than where the point itself is placed. Active trigger points and latent trigger points are the two types. While pressing on active trigger points causes pain and often referred pain, latent trigger points do not hurt at all. Massage, trigger point release, stretching, and activities to enhance posture and muscular balance are all potential treatments for trigger points. Medications and injections are options for dealing with discomfort and swelling.
