The Tree I Used to Be

Eldon Massie

This poem was inspired while splitting logs for firewood. After splitting one huge Ponderosa Pine log into two pieces, the well-seasoned inner part that once was just a small sapling, fell to my feet. It made me think of all the things this noble tree might have witnessed. As I picked it up, I saw just how tiny this majestic old monarch once was. This pencil size twig seemed to say to me, "this is the tree I used to be". I hope that this poem inspires the respect and the civility that all life deserves.
