The Sweetest Fiend

3.8 1 rating · 1 review on Book Nook

From the New York Times bestselling author of the Plated Prisoner series comes the first book in an alluring and addictive romantasy duology set in a world of fae and dark magic, loosely inspired by the legend of the Pied Piper. It’s time to pay the Piper. Our world cracked open like an egg. Power burst out, and with it, nine monstrous Banes ready to destroy everything. The powerful Core fae finally slayed them all, but each Bane left a Plague to punish us. But that’s not the only thing they left behind. I’m half Bane, half fae, and wholly hated. Survival means enduring every vicious glare and cursed outbreak. Until one day, a Plague descends upon my city that means certain death. Then he comes. The Pied Piper. He rids my city of the Plague, but it comes at a cost. One hundred and thirty people are taken as payment. Including me. I don’t know what he’s going to do to us, but I know I have to get home. My family’s lives depend on it. But the Piper won’t let me go, and something wicked stirs between us. The sweet scent in my veins beckons him, while the seductive lure of his magic sinks under my skin. I have to escape before it’s too late. Because if I don’t, it’s not just my heart at risk… But the entire world. Note: Pied Piper reimagined. This dark fantasy is full of romance and secrets, with mature themes and explicit scenes only suitable for adults. This is book one of a duology. Tropes: • Forced Proximity • Captive Romance • "Who hurt you?" • Only one bed... and horse...and tent! • So. much. banter!

I enjoyed the middle of the book, the beginning and end not so much. The beginning was super slow and a little hard to get through. I felt like I was reading about Esti in her aunt’s paper mill / on her way home for so long even though it was probably like a chapter really. There’s so much we don’t know about the fmc, like despite her father being a bane, we don’t know who he is (even though her mom must know?). Then the story finally got interesting when the piper is introduced. Of course, there’s immediately a connection between the piper and Esti. ||This reminds me of all the times I’ve seen people make fun of Romantasy fmcs for being upset they’re taken somewhere they don’t want to be and try escaping and antagonizing the mmc every chance they get. Except it’s a little justified here since Esti is stolen from her mom and aunt, and they don’t know what’s happened to each other. And of course the Piper is slow to reveal is actual altruistic motives. || The different plagues as the antagonist of the story was pretty intriguing and how they’re trying to combat it. I also enjoyed that early on when we learn about Esti’s ex boyfriend she’s completely over him and actually realizes how terrible he is and is glad that they’re not together, even though she was hurt by his actions. Towards the middle / end of the book it felt too insta love-y though, ||and it turns out they’ve been attracted to each other all along, just both denying it. Then the romance gets layer on super thick, and a lot of the lines, especially in spicy scenes are super cringe, ie “He looks like honey I went to lick.”||
