Faith. Something I Can't Feel

Steve Rhodes

An autobiography about a fascinating life that has been truly well lived. Describing a difficult childhood, a number of early family bereavements, low self-esteem and a life threatening Brain Disease, the author has certainly survived and thrived. I defy you not to be moved by the passion and pain that emanates from almost every single page of this book. A viscerally honest and at times difficult account of one persons struggle with adversity. The writing style is conversational and has a rhythm that is reminiscent of Stephen King. Having travelled quite extensively, he openly shares some stories of being away from home, feeling lost and afraid, but also invigorated and alive. As a trained counsellor, he shares some stunning insights into what makes people tick. To quote a favourite film of his, "there's also quite an amusing incident with a kebab."The author displays an understanding of the intricacies of human nature, matched, at times, with a deep mistrust of them too. Amidst all of this however, he casts a light into the good and the bad that lives inside of us all. By the end of the book I had lost count of the sheer amount of times that I had cried, fumed and laughed. On occasions, all at the same time. A bitter-sweet, but highly enlightening and enthralling book for anyone who doesn't see themselves in a positive light. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has lost sight of what is important to them, or to anyone who wants to not only be a better person, but also to catch a fleeting glimpse of what they might just be capable of with fierce determination. Buy yourself a copy of this book, even if it is only to see how other people see life, or to catch yourself from falling into all of the traps that get set by the time we are six years old. Steve made me feel that maybe my journey isn't quite over yet and honestly, I feel a fire burning in my belly at the very thought of it!
