Sounds First: My Words "d"

Martha Robinson

Sounds First Reading System addresses the fundamental challenge of reading and writing English, the lack of a reliable alphabetic code. The 41 sounds of English have over 1000 different spellings. By assigning one, common, self-contained spelling to each sound, one can learn to read more rapidly, knowing the pronunciation is accurate. This serves as a phonemic respelling above those words that do not follow the taught code. When one comes to an unknown word it can be reliably decoded by going up to the green! Martha Robinson, PhD, developed this system based on insights from a wide range of reading instructions and research. Martha, herself dyslexic, began working to understand phonics and reading instruction when her own children failed to learn to read at an expected rate. She has worked teaching people to read for over 20 years. William Hodson, software designer, developed the computer program that allows text to be converted to text with the code above it. www.soundsfirst.org
