A Virtuoso's Collection
Nathaniel Hawthorne's "A Virtuoso's Collection" follows a curious narrator into a strange museum whose modest sign conceals a hall of marvels, relics, and unsettling wit. Guided by a worldly, ironic virtuoso, he passes through rooms where stuffed beasts, birds, weapons, royal possessions, and magical curiosities are transformed into a cabinet of cultural memory: the wolf from Little Red Riding Hood, Bucephalus, Rosinante, the dove from the ark, Coleridge's albatross, Fortunatus's wishing-cap, Aladdin's lamp, sacred blades, fairy-tale slippers, and relics of sorrow, wisdom, and folly. The collection keeps blurring the sublime and the ridiculous, treating myth, literature, history, and art as equal trophies of human imagination. As the tour deepens, the narrator confronts temptations of power and immortality—Prometheus's fire, the philosopher's stone, elixir vitae, Lethe, ancient books, and sacred manuscripts—yet repeatedly rejects illusion in favor of mortality, reverence, and lived truth. The final revelations are darker still: the virtuoso is the Wandering Jew, numb to his own endless fate, while the hall itself becomes a symbolic threshold to the underworld. Hawthorne's tale is a sharp satire of vanity, materialism, and spiritual emptiness. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
