Kara Goucher: The Life of a Racer

Oliver Taylor

Goucher has made an indelible impression on American distance running on several occasions during her remarkable career. Goucher's third-place result in the 2009 Boston Marathon put her on the podium with fellow American Ryan Hall. After a 24-year gap, the United States finally swept the medals in both events. By placing third in the 2008 New York City Marathon, Goucher created American history. With her timing of 2:25:53, she became the first American woman in 14 years to finish in the top three at the ING New York City Marathon. Her time also set a new American record for a marathon debut. When Goucher won a bronze medal in the women's 10,000-meter event at the 2007 IAAF World Outdoor Championships, she became the first American woman to achieve such a feat. She started running when she was in the seventh grade in an effort to obtain a junior high school prize. In order to accomplish this, she needed to excel in academics, the arts, and sports. So she decided to participate in cross country since there are no elimination rounds. After some time, she started taking running seriously. She has spent the last three decades working in the sports world, experiencing both the highs and lows.

This book tells the story of Kara, a dedicated racer who is resilient, and full of energy and determination.
