Escape to Freedom
Life on the Wright’s Plantation in Virginia circa 1847 was unusual to say the least. Nathaniel and Martha Wright’s son, Joshua has been friends with Toby, the son of John, the black overseer, and Missy, the orphaned daughter of slaves, from his early childhood. Toby’s mother, Lily, like the rest of the household and kitchen workers are more like family than servants due in large part to Martha’s Christian and northern upbringing.Feelings between two of the three teens are revealed and young love soon comes into play for the other through the appearance of a stranger, or is she a stranger? Another stranger appears who proves to be a godsend in more ways than anyone would have imagined, and both strangers display scars from their past that they’re endeavoring to escape from. The bonds of friendships already well established throughout the plantation are added to, challenged and solidified during the mass exodus that ensues when they go up north.Join the Wrights and their extended plantation family as they face perils from men, perils from sickness, perils from nature, suffer great loss and leave behind all they’ve known on their journey as they, “Escape to Freedom.”
