Traitors Sneer Working-Class Tories
EVER SINCE WORKING-CLASS MEN FIRST GOT THE VOTE IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY, A SIZABLE PORTION OF THEM HAVE VOTED TORY. IT WAS 1928 BEFORE ALL WOMEN COULD VOTE AND BRITAIN BECAME A DEMOCRACY AT LAST. AS THERE WERE IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY, TWO PARTIES VIED FOR THE POPULAR VOTE: CONSERVATIVE AND LABOUR. OSTENSIBLY, THE CONSERVATIVES WERE THE PARTY OF THE WELL-OFF, WHILE LABOUR WAS FOR THE WORKING CLASSES. IT DID NOT ALWAYS WORK THAT WAY, THOUGH. WORKING-CLASS PEOPLE STILL PERSISTED IN VOTING TORY. WHY? THIS BOOK LOOKS AT THE REASONS UNDERLYING WORKING-CLASS SUPPORT FOR THE TORIES. IT INVOLVES RACISM, XENOPHOBIA AND HATRED OF PRACTICALLY ALL MINORITY GROUPS. OF COURSE, PROPAGANDA PLAYS ITS PART TOO AND THE BRITISH MEDIA ARE HAPPY TO PROVIDE IT. THERE ARE SOME RATHER OBVIOUS REASONS FOR THE WORKING CLASSES TO VOTE TORY, BUT THERE ARE SOME SURPRISES AS WELL.
