The Algorithmic City: Power, Justice and AI
In The Algorithmic City, Seth Lazar argues that Artificial Intelligence and other computing technologies have transformed the conditions under which we live together, while political philosophy has barely taken notice. To remedy this, Lazar offers an account of the "Algorithmic City," the network of algorithmically-mediated social relations governed by platforms, recommender systems, and emerging AI agents. He demonstrates how that governing power can in principle be justified and shows how doing so requires rethinking some core tenets of political philosophy. He further offers ideals at which algorithmic governance should aim, and both regulatory and technical proposals for realising them.
