Homophonic Prepper-Checksums-Puzzles: Checksum 034

Francis Gurtowski

Homophonic Prepper-Checksums-Puzzles is a monumental, triple-digit series of massive, triple-digit collections of multiple-page, letter-substitution, mental workouts suitable for exhaustive "paper and pencil" attacks strenuous enough to keep both your depression-prone spirits up, up, up and your atrophy-prone, cerebral cortex fit and trim.

Each puzzle consists of a 45x90 rectanglar block of alphabetic text which you have to conceptually at least replace with a 45x90 block of numeric text.

Your challenge is to solve for the original 26 independent variables A through Z.

You have to replace each letter of the alphabet not with a potentially, different letter but instead with a decimal digit.

Once appropriately replaced, it is a given that the 90 digits on each line add up to the same sum whatever.

Moreover, once so replaced, it is also a given that the 45 digits in each column add up to a sum which is at least as large as the immediately preceeding column's sum, going left to right.

Below each block is a column-by-column series of stalactite-like graphics indicating any change in the sum of the digits in the succeeding columns.

Each of the multitudinous, challenging puzzled specimens contained in each instance of this star-studded succession of scholarly tomes is objectively, intrinsically fun to solve even right now - in the current era, before the coming storm - amidst all of the other competing distractions surrounding us during what in retrospect might very well be belatedly recognized as the best of times.

More to the point, each of these mood-altering, analytical obstacle-courses will serve as an over-the-counter, clinical antidote to the scourge of bunker boredom while you and yours strive to survive the protracted, mind-numbing, aftermath of the predicted apocalypse.

Stock up with an oversupply of these affordable, luxury articles which - in the worst of times - will be ideal commodities for bartering with other preppers for their more mundane provisions of the menial, meat-and-potatoes variety.

Go right head and call me Chicken Little, but let me tell you in all sincerity that you would be well advised to get these fabulous fungibles while the getting is good, for they may well all too soon turn out to be the gold-standard coin of the approaching, post-apocalyptic realm.

Never let your mind, much less your body, atrophy.

Be advised that in order to make your decryption experience even more challenging - and thus much, much, much more rewarding - than it would ordinarily be, there is a catch in my approach to my separate, letter-by-letter encryptions.

Not content to simply substitute precisely one ciphertext letter per plaintext letter \(decimal digit\), I instead more or less arbitrarily substitute one or more ciphertext letters for each plaintext letter (decimal digit).

So I do not use a simple substitution cipher.

I instead resort to what is called homophonic coding.

According to Merriam-Webster, a homophone is one of two or more words pronounced alike but different in meaning or derivation or spelling - such as the words to, too, and two.

Conventual homophonic coding not only camouflages but also distorts the patented statistics of the English language, which are common knowledge amongst Scrabble aficionados.

The decimal-digit statistics of arbitrary sums are yet to be patented.

With a simple substitution cipher, if the respective frequencies of the plaintext crossword approximate normality then the same will be said of the ciphertext crossword - only spread differently.

A simple substitution cipher is comparatively a piece of cake to attack with paper and pencil.

Homophonic encoding, on the other hand, is absolutely a beast.
