Apple Season
This poetry chapbook won the Mississippi Valley Chapbook contest for 2012. "These are richly sensuous poems of rural experince. They have the freshness of childhood, with the child's fascination with the details of kitchen and farmyard, without emotional indulgence that reminiscence woud be liable to. The adult writer is present as a voice only in occasional suggestions of how a moment might be seen in the future, but such alternatives are given more as speculation rather than as privileged moments of retrospection. The child's perspective is complicated by her own attraction to moments of transition, as when a season is delicately poised between past and future, and by her half-conscious sense of the fragility of her happiness, dependent as it is on her grandmother, who makes possible the world these poems evoke with grace and clarity.
