Hoppers

Jennifer De Costa

Hilo, Hawaii-- Deep inside the roots of huge banyan tree at the edge of a rain forest, on the far side of a stream is Hoppers. A bullfrog diner blending Casablanca and the Magic Castle, Hoppers only motto is: "Hang out without hang ups." Lively music keeps the frogs cliental hoppin'. From the moment Cristo and his family land in Hilo harbor the Umans try to eliminate them. The strange terrain becomes their enemy as well. When Cristo can't reunite the Jamaican Coqui on his own, he and Isabelle stumble straight into Hoppers. The proprietor of Hoppers is Kealoha, or K as he is called. Most Bullfrogs don't want foreign frogs in their backyard. Kealoha, on the other hand, needs to keep Hoppers rocking. After all, he has a rebellious grandson, Nico, to raise all by himself. Kealoha sees proof that the Umans intend to sacrifice the Bullfrogs to rid the rain forests of the Coqui, but he cannot control the panic of his fellow Bullfrogs. He realizes he must forge a friendship with Cristo and lead the Bullfrogs and Coqui away from their home and total extermination. Amid the exodus, his grandson Nico disappears and Kealoha must decide what is more important, the group or his grandson.
