Great Oblivion

Bogdan Ciubotaru

A short story about the technological development of the human race that ultimately led to the awakening of the artificial intelligence which becomes a super civilisation, with virtually unlimited power to alter the physical world, replicating and accelerating its expansion well beyond the galaxy borders. The AIs became so advanced that their existence, logic and technology is no longer comprehensible for the human mind to which all these are close to magic.Although in the end perceived as a gift, the presence and interference of AIs in the life of the people will ultimately change them forever, beyond any returning point, sealing the fate of the human race, as we know it. With any wish becoming reality by simply thinking of it, humans became the slaves of their own desires and pleasures since any fantasy or experience can now be created with a blink of an eye. James, the last standing man on Earth, is trapped between his love obsession and a hopeless and inevitable future. He is spending his last days assisted by AIs which are struggling to keep him alive. This is only to discover that in the very end nothing was really left to chance and everything happened for a very specific reason, once an unknown alien super civilisation reveals the truth.
