Onboard Like A Fraternity

In the world of education, finding highly qualified teachers is more difficult than ever and the teachers entering the profession through alternative routes of certification are somewhat less prepared than teachers of the past. Teaching is a difficult profession, and it is important that we prepare our teachers through a thorough onboarding process that prepares them not only for the classroom, but for all of the challenges associated with the teaching profession.

In the corporate world, employees’ views on the workplace and their careers have changed drastically. Employees are prioritizing work-life balance over the forty-hour work week, looking more towards company culture and climate, and seeking advancement opportunities as part of their profession. Employers need to refocus their attention and onboard new employees with a greater understanding of what today’s employees are looking for in a career.

Onboard Like a Fraternity shares the story of a new human resources leader who has inherited a lackluster department facing an ever-growing turnover rate in a growing school district. By chance he found a mentor that will lead him on a journey to overhaul his onboarding process to meet the needs of a changing society. This journey is parallel to the process of a fraternity and how they recruit, onboard, and retain new members based on their brand and a life-long commitment towards ideals similar to those of employees in the field of education.

The lessons learned through this journey can easily be replicated in any workplace to retain the best employees in education or the corporate world.
